For a different side of Rio, head to the hilltop neighbourhood of Santa Teresa, a bohemian quarter of cobbled streets, colonial mansions, art studios and viewpoints, reached by the historic tram. Below it sits Lapa, the heart of Rio's nightlife, where the famous Lapa Arches frame street parties and the bars and samba clubs come alive after dark, especially at weekends.
